One slice of pound cake, a little whipped cream and a few sliced strawberries - instant gourmet dessert!

Preparing healthy snacks for yourself in a dorm can be a challenge, but stocking the right supplies up front can help you to be more creative than reaching into a bag of chips.

Go for small jars or packets, even if they’re a bit more expensive.  You’ll need less storage space and create less waste.

Soft goods:

  • whole wheat tortillas
  • roasted almonds

Seasonings:

  • salt and pepper
  • season salt – or salt free seasoning blend, depending on your taste
  • cinnamon and sugar mixture
  • soy  sauce
  • dried herb blend – I like Tuscan herbs or Herbs de Provence – both will add a nice punch of flavor to just about any savory dish

Dry foods:

  • microwave popcorn
  • ramen noodles
  • rice packets ready to steam
  • oatmeal packets
  • cereal
  • peanut butter
  • nutella

Canned:

  • cherry tomatoes
  • diced tomatoes with green chiles, Mexican seasoned
  • black beans, Mexican seasoned
  • shelf-stable packs of diced peaches, applesauce and mixed fruit

    Always keep fresh fruit on hand for snacking.

Refrigerated:

  • tofu
  • jam
  • baby carrots
  • eggs
  • milk
  • cheddar cheese
  • mayonnaise
  • mustard
